Research

Metabolism is the set of chemical reactions that drive life. Changes in metabolism are observed in nearly every disease process.  Research in my group is focused on understanding at the molecular level the fundamental metabolic processes underlying cellular disease physiology- what pathways and processes contribute to disease and how do cells acquire the nutrients to fuel them? We tackle this problem using a fundamentally biochemical approach, based on integrating new mass spectrometry technology with contemporary genetic engineering methods to be able to precisely quantify and alter metabolic fluxes in vivo. Our science is fundamentally interdisciplinary, integrating chemical logic with physiologic processes in mammals with the goal of identifying and validating new targets for major unmet needs in human disease.

We have active projects in the following specific research areas:

  1. Energy metabolism of heart failure
  2. Role of obesity and diet in providing lipids to fuel breast cancer
  3. How does hepatic specific lipid metabolism accelerate liver cancer
  4. Liver pancreas amino acid crosstalk regulates susceptibility to diabetes.
