The Solve ME/CFS Initiative
The Solve ME/CFS Initiative is sponsoring a grant program to attract researchers who work in the broad scientific domains of immunology, metabolism, the microbiome, genetics, and neurology to apply their research to the problem of solving/treating myalgic encephalomyelitis (formerly known as chronic fatigue syndrome, or ME/CFS). This current seed grant funding range is $35k-$55k, ad their information indicates that this may lead to larger grants after the pilor phase. The application deadline is June 30th.

STAT Wunderkinds Nomination
Each year the excellent health and science publication STAT has a Wunderkind competition, searching the country for the next generation of biomedical leaders. Last year they chose 30 Wunderkinds. Each person has their profile published in STAT, providing national exposure.
Typically these are postdocs and residents but also young CEOs. I’d love to mine the rest of your group for ideas for people to nominate. Nomination is pretty easy and we can help. If you agree, please forward this email.
By May 31, 2019, please send:
- Name of the candidate
- Department or program. If the person is a postdoc, who is their PI?
- A brief explanation for why this person should be nominated.
Information from STAT:
Who is eligible: Our Wunderkinds are postdoctoral fellows, medical residents, interns, medical fellows,
and industry scientists who have completed their terminal degree (Ph.D., M.D., D.O.,
Sci.D., D.D.S., or the equivalent) and are in their first job/training program after,
somewhere in North America. Nominees should be done with their degree, and on the
next leg of their career, but not running their own research program independently.
What does nomination entail? Through STAT’s online form, submit the candidate’s CV, a research paper, and an explanation for why this person should be a STAT Wunderkind: What is this persons scientific or clinical achievements? What is this person doing to improve health and medicine?
If you have a nomination, please work with Julie Kiefer to submit the nomination.

Call for Genetics Training Grant Applications
We have openings for multiple predoctoral traineeships on the Genetics Training Grant.
We invite
applications from graduate students in Years 2-4 (graduate school entry dates 2015-2017),
although
some preference will be given to younger students due to NIH guidelines. We particularly
urge
applications from underrepresented minority students.
The application should include the following items:
- Completed 2019 Cover Sheet (2 Pages)
- Your CV with a descriptions of your education, training, publications and presentations
- A short (1-2 page), carefully thought out summary of your thesis research project as you see it now. There is a limit of two pages, not including references or figures. Font must be 11pt Arial, single spaced, with 1 inch margins. The proposal must be written entirely by the student applicant.
- Copies of i) your academic transcripts, both undergraduate and graduate, ii) the report
of
your GRE scores. (These can be informal; you do not need to obtain official copies). - Required only from second-year students who have not yet passed their
departmental prelim exam:The committee's summary from your 1st-year capstone exam. - Three letters of support. One must be from your advisor, and should comment on the
independence with which you composed your proposal. The other letters should be from faculty
familiar with your academic or research potential (instructors, examiners, rotation advisors, or
committee members). Letters should be sent directly to pattyl@genetics.utah.edu.
The deadline is April 11, 2019
Applications should be sent to:
Patty Lisieski
Email: pattyl@genetics.utah.edu.

Three Minute Thesis Showcase Competition | Thursday, February 21 | 3:30 – 4:30 pm
Graduate students from across campus have been practicing through January & February to prepare for a Showcase Competition in which they share their research in three minutes or fewer. These workshops and presentations are an excellent way for graduate students to learn how to distill and streamline their research so that it’s easily understood by a lay audience. We find that students who work on their interdisciplinary communication skills have an easier time in job talks, interviews, and in bringing their research to a wider public. Come see what Three Minute Thesis workshops can do for your students and consider encouraging them to sign up for the workshops happening in 2019-2020.

Call for Developmental Biology Training Grant Applications
We anticipate openings for pre-doctoral trainees on the NIH Developmental Biology Training Grant. We invite applications from graduate students who have passed their Capstone exams. Interested graduate students in Years 2 - 4 are urged to apply, although some preference will be given to students earlier in their careers due to NIH guidelines. Applicants should be aware that an effort is made to support only one trainee per lab, in order to distribute trainee support as widely as possible. Persons from underrepresented ethnic groups and economically disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply and self-identify.
Application are due 8/29/2018
